Frequently Asked Questions
When should I order fuel?
When to Order Fuel:
Call us or order online when your tank drops to 25% so we can schedule your delivery before levels get too low.
Prefer a Hands-Off Option?
Sign up for Automatic Delivery. We track your usage and automatically schedule fill-ups based on your heating needs—so you never have to check your gauge again.
Why is my propane tank only filled to 80%?
Propane expands as temperatures rise. To ensure complete safety, propane tanks are considered full at 80% capacity. Leaving the remaining 20% of extra space allows the gas to expand safely in warmer weather without increasing tank pressure.
What is the difference between Automatic Delivery and Will-Call?
With Automatic Delivery, we track weather conditions and your household’s heating history to calculate your fuel levels, automatically scheduling fill-ups before your tank gets low. With Will-Call, you monitor your own gauge and call us or order online when your tank reaches 25%.
How often should I have my heating system serviced?
We recommend an annual tune-up and safety inspection for both oil and propane systems once every 12 months. Regular maintenance keeps your system running efficiently, lowers heating bills, and prevents sudden winter breakdowns.
Do you offer 24/7 emergency service?
Yes! We provide round-the-clock emergency heating repair and fuel delivery for our existing customers. If your heat goes out during extreme cold or after business hours, call 207-442-7994 to reach our on-call service team.
What to Do If You Smell Propane (Gas Leak Safety)
Propane smells like rotten eggs or a skunk's spray so you can detect leaks quickly. If you smell propane inside or around your home, act immediately and follow these steps:
NO FLAMES OR SPARKS: Do not light matches, smoke, turn on or off light switches, use appliances, or use phones inside the building. Sparks from these sources can trigger an explosion.
EVACUATE IMMEDIATELY: Get everyone out of the house or building right away.
SHUT OFF THE GAS (If Safe): If you can safely access your propane tank, turn the main gas supply valve clockwise (to the right) until it is completely closed.
REPORT THE LEAK: Once you are at a safe distance from the building, call emergency services (911) and then call M.W. Sewall at 207-442-7994.
DO NOT RE-ENTER: Stay outside and keep away from the area until emergency personnel or an M.W. Sewall technician determines it is safe to return.
GET A SAFETY CHECK: Do not turn the gas back on yourself. A certified technician must inspect your propane system, perform a leak test, and safely reignite your pilot lights.
